Through the generous support of Canadians, as well as corporate and government donations, over $98,000 was raised to support this operation.

The Typhoon

In mid-September 2018, Typhoon Mangkhut, known locally as Ompong, made landfall in the Philippines. The super typhoon was the most powerful storm to hit the country since Haiyan in 2013. The storm also barreled through Hong Kong and struck mainland China. In the Philippines, over 100 people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands were forced to flee their homes.

Red Cross Response

Before the storm even hit, the Philippines Red Cross joined a massive government-led effort to get people ready. After spreading safety messages and urging people to heed evacuation orders, trained Red Cross teams sheltered in the path of the storm, and were ready to respond quickly as soon as the storm passed.

The Red Cross focused on providing emergency shelter, food and clean water, and health care.

CRC Contribution

The Canadian Red Cross sent bilateral funds to support the Philippines Red Cross in their response to Typhoon Mangkhut and subsequent tropical storms during the rainy season. These funds were used to facilitate the distribution of dignity kits to mothers and newborns in Eastern Samar province. The kits include a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and female sanitary items for mothers and baby clothes, a towel, a blanket, and diapers for infants, among other essentials.
