Canadian Red Cross response

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador lifted the evacuation order for all residents of Labrador City as of noon on Monday, July 22, 2024. Allowing communities in Labrador City to return home.

The Canadian Red Cross is working closely with provincial and municipal governments and Indigenous leadership to support individuals, families and communities impacted by the 2024 Labrador Wildfires. 

At the request of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Red Cross is registering those impacted by the 2024 Labrador Wildfires and is providing financial assistance, information services, emotional and referrals to other resources available in the community.

The following key figures reflect the Canadian Red Cross’ response in Labrador as of
September 4, 2024.

  • This support was provided on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland
    and Labrador.
  • Sent 3,200 emergency supplies to Happy Valley-Goose Bay to support people impacted. This includes cots, blankets, pillows, teddy bears for children, and hygiene kits.
  • Supported six emergency accommodation sites. Distributed more than $3.2 million to 3,291 households whose primary residence was
    under evacuation order.
  • Distributed $181,500 to 363 employed and self-employed residents of Labrador City and Wabush whose employment was impacted by the wildfires.
  • Distributed $150,000 to 72 eligible businesses in Labrador City and Wabush that were impacted by the wildfires.
