Canadian Red Cross response

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has advised that an evacuation order is in place for Labrador City due to wildfires.

People under evacuation order can find the latest information and guidance from authorities here: Alerts - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Canadian Red Cross is working closely with provincial and municipal governments and Indigenous leadership to support individuals, families and communities impacted by the 2024 Labrador Wildfires.

At the request of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Red Cross is registering those impacted by the 2024 Labrador Wildfires and will be on site in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to provide reception and information services, emergency accommodation, personal services, emotional support and referrals to other resources available in the community.

On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Red Cross will also be distributing $1,000 in one-time financial assistance to households whose primary residence is under evacuation order in Labrador City.

Register with the Red Cross if you are impacted by the wildfires in Labrador

The Canadian Red Cross is encouraging people impacted by the Labrador Wildfires 2024 to register online or by calling 1-800-863-6582 24 hours a day.

Registration with the Red Cross ensures people can be contacted while away from home, and can be reached with information on Red Cross services and assistance that may become available to them during this difficult time.

Registration process: important information

When registering, you will be asked basic information about you and your household, such as your name, date of birth, email address and home address.

Register now

Please note: Only one person in your household needs to register. Please do not register again if you or someone you live with has already registered with the Red Cross over the phone or through the website.

FRAUD ALERT: Unfortunately, there are some people who may try to take advantage of those impacted by a disaster through fraudulent tactics. The Canadian Red Cross will never ask for your banking information, social insurance number or credit card number during registration or to receive financial assistance. The Canadian Red Cross communicates only via email, phone, or in-person and would never send a link through a text message to invite you to register or receive assistance. The Red Cross encourages people to stay informed from credible sources, such as the Government of Canada’s website for fraud prevention tips. If you suspect you have been a victim of fraudulent activity, please contact your local police authority.

Financial assistance

On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Red Cross will be distributing $1,000 in one-time financial assistance per household whose primary residence is under evacuation order in Labrador City.

To access this assistance, people must be registered with the Red Cross. Canadian Red Cross will verify their eligibility for this assistance based on information submitted during their registration and information provided by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

People who have not yet registered with the Red Cross are encouraged to do so online or by calling 1-800-863-6582 24 hours a day.
