Frequently Asked Questions
We recognize that there's a lot to learn before becoming a Canadian Red Cross volunteer.
That's why we have collected the most frequently asked questions to help you become a volunteer.
If you still have questions that remain unanswered, or you need more information, please contact us.
First, find a role that interests you - one that suits your skills and experience and fits your availability. Instructions may vary depending on the role that holds your interest.
You may be asked to register for and attend a virtual open house to learn about volunteer opportunities, then given further instruction on how to apply.
You may be asked to apply for a role directly. In both scenarios, after you've formally applied a representative from the volunteer recruitment team will be in contact to advise you of the next steps.
This varies depending on the role and the time of year.
More time commitment details are provided in the role descriptions and during the application process to make sure the opportunity is a good fit for you.
You should have received a confirmation email once you completed your online application or registration for an Open House. If you have any questions, please contact us. Due to high application volume, we process volunteer applications based on organizational needs and priorities. If you haven’t heard from our team following your application, don’t worry we will be reaching out to you.
However, volunteers are needed year-round for a variety of programs.
It's quicker and easier to apply online.

The health and safety of our volunteers is essential to us. All emergency response work is undertaken with the safety of all Red Cross personnel in mind. Most of the work happens outside of the immediate impact areas and we always follow the direction of local authorities to ensure safety.
In addition, information about safety concerns, orientation and training is provided to volunteers prior to taking on their assignments.
