Flood Preparedness Campaign for Older Adults

In 2019, the Canadian Red Cross, in partnership with the National Institute on Ageing, reviewed the latest evidence and expert opinions to inform the development of recommendations for governments, organizations, and individuals to improve emergency preparedness, response, and recovery for older adults.

The Inclusive Resilience project has implemented these recommendations (and those from the research conducted by Partners for Action for the project) to engage with older adults in more relevant ways. In early Spring 2022, the project delivered a nationwide maildrop campaign along with a Red Cross social media campaign targeting older adults living in areas at risk of flooding. The areas were identified using geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze demographic and flood data. A postcard with information on flood preparedness, including how to tailor an emergency kit to meet the unique needs of older adults, was mailed to nearly 300,000 households. The campaign was timed for the beginning of Spring flood season.
