Benoit First Nation: Preparing for Climate Risks

St. George's Bay, Newfoundland | August 2022 - June 2023
A man gathers wood with his daughter outside in the winter preparing in case of emergencies.
Through the support of a community grant, the Benoit First Nation in St. George’s Bay, Newfoundland, raised awareness of climate risks among Indigenous People, newcomers, women, older adults, and low-income households; the initiative also promoted simple, practical actions for general preparedness, flooding, and wildfires.

To reach and engage with this wide audience, Benoit First Nation developed a multi-faceted approach, combining traditional printed and digital media, social media, as well as in-person events such as workshops and cultural community-led activities. Grassroots and area-specific information was tailored to the region.

The efforts reached over 3,000 community members and resulted in the delivery of emergency preparedness workshops, videos, flyers, and a dedicated webpage.
