Starting New Canadians Out on the Right Foot
SmartStart is an injury prevention program that offers free workshops specifically designed for immigrants, refugees and new Canadians. Newcomers face a number of challenges in Canada including: geography; sometimes drastically different weather; language barriers; and customs and laws they don’t always understand. Research indicates that as a result of these challenges, the risk of injury is higher among many minority groups.
The program provides participants with a basic understanding of how to respond to emergencies and prevent injuries. Topics covered include basics in home safety, when and how to use 911, best practices in infant and child safety as well as thin ice, water, and road safety, with a particular focus on extreme weather risks in Canada. SmartStart provides newcomers with information that will help them safely settle into their new community.
With the growing number of immigrants arriving in Manitoba, we have an increase in demand for the SmartStart program. This program is funded through generous donations from the community. You can help Red Cross make Manitoba safer for everyone.
