Canadian First Aid Education Guidelines

First Aid, Resuscitation, and Education Guidelines: 2020 Clinical and Education Updates for Canada

The First Aid, Resuscitation, and Education Guidelines: 2020 Clinical and Education Updates for Canada are the first guidelines built by Canadians, for Canadians, based on international and Canadian science. The guidelines contain recommendations that will help first aid and CPR providers in the workplace, community, or in advanced life-saving roles stay apprised of new clinical and education techniques and approaches based on the latest evidence. Our goals are to improve outcomes for people who experience cardiac arrest or other medical emergencies, and increase an individual's confidence to respond in an emergency situation.

The scientific foundation of the guidelines was built from the 2020 International First Aid & Resuscitation Education Guidelines from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The Canadian Red Cross is a leading contributor to the international guidelines.

The focus of the 2020 guidelines is both on how we teach people and the clinical skills that are included in Canadian first aid programs. How we educate people in first aid matters. We focus on each audience's needs for learning because evidence shows the way we teach things makes a difference in an individual's propensity for action in emergency situations which ultimately creates safer communities.

The IFRC's updated 2020 International First Aid & Resuscitation Education Guidelines serve as the basis for first aid practices across 190 countries that teach over 20 million people in first aid around the world.
