2024 Labrador Wildfires: A Story of Community Resilience

August 23, 2024 - I had just signed off on a Friday night when I received a text from my manager. “Fire in Labrador. Are you able to go?” “Absolutely!” I replied. Having only recently joined the Canadian Red Cross, I was keen to get a deployment under my belt. The challenge of course is that communities in Labrador are quite remote, so getting there isn’t always easy.

Friendly Calls Program provides needed connections during historic Atlantic storm

March 11, 2024 - Friendly Calls is a Canadian Red Cross program that matches people over the age of 18 with trained Red Cross personnel. Through regular phone check-ins, our program offers emotional support, healthy coping strategies, and well-being resources and services. 

While the  Friendly Calls Program provides emotional support to people experiencing loneliness and isolation in their everyday lives, what some may not know is that the program can also help participants during sudden and challenging events.

Red Cross responds to wildfires in Nova Scotia

June 02, 2023 - Wildfires are burning in Halifax region and Shelburne County Nova Scotia, forcing people to evacuate from their homes. The Canadian Red Cross is on the ground in support of the provincial and municipal governments. We’re working together with community organizations to provide help to those who have been impacted.

Like many of their neighbours in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, they’d been advised to prepare ahead of time; but when their front door - closed and locked - was ripped off their house with a loud bang at 3 a.m., the severity of the storm became clear.
