The Canadian Red Cross is inviting older adults (65+) in Saint John, St. Andrews, Moncton and Miramichi, New Brunswick, areas to register for a new program designed to connect them to community services and programs.
“The Connection New Brunswick program is a free service that pairs older adults with our team of Community Connector volunteers, who will help them engage with their local community,” says Alyssa Margeson, Project Manager. “It is our hope the program will help seniors continue to live at home – comfortable, healthy and safe – for longer.”
Volunteers will be screened and trained by the Canadian Red Cross, and then paired with older adults who have registered with the program.
“Meeting new people can be tough, and navigating community resources can be tricky,” says Margeson. “That’s where Connection New Brunswick comes in.”
Participating older adults will work together with their Community Connector Volunteer to identify their needs, explore interests, and establish goals. The volunteer will then create a customized list of activities, tapping into organizations and services near the participating older adult.
Participating older adults will then work through their plan with the support of their Volunteer – who will check in regularly to see how they’re doing.
“We know these partnerships will be highly rewarding for both older adults and our Volunteers,” says Margeson. “We can’t wait to hear their stories.”
Connection New Brunswick is a pilot project provided in Saint John, St. Andrews, Moncton and Miramichi, funded by the Health Seniors Pilot Project.
