Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian Education (H.Ed) lessons delve into history, ethics and politics, human psychology, and reveal a whole network of international organizations working to apply International Humanitarian Law, also known as the law of war. Humanitarian Education trainings provide the required knowledge and support to facilitate H.Ed lessons in the classroom, and are divided into 2 parts:
Part 1: In-person training, March 21: This full day training, available to high school teachers and Teacher Candidates in Ontario, is facilitated by Canadian Red Cross legal experts and humanitarian practitioners from the field alongside teachers currently implementing H.Ed lessons in their classrooms. Subject matter experts walk teachers through FREE ready to use lessons about humanitarian issues and International Humanitarian Law. Lessons complement subjects such as global issues, social studies, history, law, civics and language arts. Curriculum maps can be requested for most subject areas.
Part 2: Asynchronous content: includes select recorded webinars from subject matter experts in humanitarian operations, and in the classroom who provide a deep dive into topics covered in H.Ed lessons, such as refugees, child soldiers, gender-based violence, protection of civilians and the natural environment, and international justice. Asynchronous content concludes with a short, 5-minute summary survey outlining steps to implement a lesson in the classroom.
Part 1 and Part 2 of the Humanitarian Education training must be completed to receive a certificate of recognition.
This free training is offered by the Canadian Red Cross, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa faculty of education.
