The Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian Education Train the Trainer Workshops are a professional development program intended for educators in British Columbia who wish to strengthen their capacity to help high school teachers in their district help students better understand the principles of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), justice, human rights, and humanitarian action. Humanitarian Education activities can help youth develop critical thinking skills about the violence they are witnessing on social media and in some cases, first-hand.
Our train-the-trainers approach aims to make humanitarian education trainings more accessible to teachers across the province of British Columbia. This 2-day professional development opportunity is unique to teachers in British Columbia who are committed to promoting awareness and respect of International Humanitarian Law by participating in Humanitarian Education trainings and workshops. Among those who register, approximately 15 teachers from across British Columbia will be selected to participate. Successful applicants will receive the following by participating in the training:
- A chance to hear from and collaborate with leading experts in the field, including International Humanitarian Law legal experts, humanitarian practitioners returning from international deployments, and teachers trained in Humanitarian Education.
- A facilitator's handbook to bring professional development on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) to teachers in your school district.
- Curriculum mapping for subjects aligned with Humanitarian Education.
- New resources to help your students think critically about issues related to armed conflict.
- The opportunity to design a training model appropriate to your school district.
- Instant access to a network of humanitarian educators.
- Follow-up support from Canadian Red Cross staff to implement a training for teachers in your region.
This training ensures a valuable and dynamic professional development experience by providing experiential learning opportunities through activities and trained Canadian Red Cross personnel and other field practitioners! Although this training will be in English, all the above-mentioned resources are also available in French.
Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the training.
