Through the generous support of Canadians, as well as corporate and government donations, approximately $965,000 was raised to support this operation.

The earthquake

On September 7th and 19th, 2017, powerful earthquakes struck central Mexico, affecting over 1 million people. They claimed the lives of over 400 people and damaged thousands of buildings.

Red Cross Response

The response from the Mexican Red Cross was swift, deploying over 30,000 volunteers to respond to the two earthquakes, primarily in the areas of search and rescue, medical personnel, pre-hospital and hospital care and distribution of relief items.

CRC Contribution

The Canadian Red Cross facilitated the distribution of relief items including mattresses, blankets, stoves and kitchen kits.

Further, the Canadian Red Cross is supporting The Community Resilience to Earthquakes Program, which aims to build the resilience of 80,300 people from the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Morelos and Puebla, creating community civil protection brigades, developing emergency plans for earthquakes and floods, and training in provision of first aid.
