Franklin, Canadian Red Cross Driver: Well I’ve been with Canadian Red Cross for ten years as a driver. So far as I’m concerned it’s a family. It’s a family affair.
Mike, Disaster Management Volunteer: I’ve always been fascinated with the Red Cross, especially from an early age. First thing I think: if you have the free time, you may as well give back to your community because otherwise it’s Saturday afternoon, I’d be on my couch right now doing something far less productive than helping those in need.
Martha, Canadian Red Cross Support Worker: It’s very important to think about each other. But it’s no way to do this without people. We need to support and help people who have nothing.
Franklin: It is good for the driver to give a helping hand.Always try to be very, very positive. One day I may be like the person. So, if you do something good to somebody, somebody will do the same thing to you. So, that’s my policy. Simple like that.
Mike: Every call is completely different from the last and you never know what you’re walking into. The one that stands out in my mind the most would have to be the first personal disaster that I ever responded to. This lady had been evacuated from a house fire where she had completely lost everything and wasn’t sure what was going to happen.
Etheline, Red Cross Transportation Client: I had a left knee replacement so that’s when I started to use Red Cross. Sometimes you know you’re a little late for the bus and you miss it. So that’s when you really miss your transportation.
Jean & Art, Red Cross Nutrition Support Clients: I find I tire very easily. I have a lot of arthritis and that’s what’s causing it probably. Generally people want to stay in their own home. I can now identify with that, with, you know, my health going down, and needing help.
Milton, Drop-in Food Bank Client & Volunteer: I am a refugee here in Canada. My family and me is in Canada one year. I am happy the Red Cross is helping every day.
Etheline: You know you need someone with you. You need someone to help you out and do things for you.
Franklin: I love driving. I just love it. And I love to see people too. I love to talk to people. If you love what you do, you don’t get tired. I think I love what I do.
Martha: It’s my honor to represent Red Cross because when they open the door and you see the faces it’s like wow, this is something different, something huge, something magic.
Mike: It makes you realize that what you’re doing does have an impact. You see how much you’ve done for them and how glad they are that you put in your time. It really means a lot.
Jean: They’re great people. They are great people, they do a fine job. They are a part of the community, yes definitely. Etheline: I’m thankful for Red Cross, because without them I don’t know what would happen to me. Makes you feel good. You know, you’re still alive.
Milton: The Red Cross is important for my life. You know what you see here? This here is life. Every day, every day. I’m happy.
Mike: It’s a good thing that they have services like this because she had nowhere else to turn and it’s been a real eye opening experience, realizing what we have an not taking it for granted and appreciating it even more.
