On Friday, September 28, several earthquakes hit the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi. The damage was as swift as it was intense. The earthquakes caused a tsunami which rained down further destruction. The hardest-hit area was the Donggala district; as of this writing, no one has been able to reach the area to assess the damage and find out what has happened to the 300,000 people in that area.Communication lines are down and hundreds of buildings have been destroyed.
But the devastation has not stopped at infrastructure: hundreds have died and hundreds more have been injured by these destructive events.
Working alongside several agencies on the ground, the Red Cross has started search and rescue operations and also delivered first aid and basic medical services. The depths of suffering are not yet known, but Red Cross teams on the ground will be there for the victims of this chaos.
Canadian Red Cross has relief supplies pre-positioned in the region and will scale up response depending on the priority needs identified by rapid response and assessment teams.
How you can help
The Red Cross is working around the world to coordinate emergency relief and recovery efforts and get help to people in affected areas as quickly as possible. Money raised will enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from these disasters and other related events in and around the affected area.Donate to the Indonesia Earthquake & Tsunami Appeal
