This week, the Canadian Red Cross celebrates all volunteers during National Volunteer Week, April 12-18, 2015.
Only a few short years after arriving to Canada from Italy, Nicolas Lacetera was looking for an opportunity to give back to his community. In September 2014, he joined the network of Red Cross volunteers - becoming a valued addition to the Street Relief Team with the St. James Community Monday Breakfast Program, in downtown Toronto. Not only is he a welcome addition, but he has become someone whom the program relies and depends on for continued support.
As a social scientist, Nico has dedicated his life to giving back, while researching what motivates others to do so as well.
“Volunteering has been a big part of my life,” says Nico. “I believe it is important to give back, and to show my daughters the importance of it too.”
The Monday Breakfast Program is a community health program run by Red Cross staff and volunteers in Ontario. The program provides a warm meal to those in need.
Every second Monday, Nico can be found at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church cooking meals, serving food and cleaning up after program participants.
“We serve approximately 60-80 people a day,” explains Nico. “It makes me feel good meeting new people and establishing a connection with the participants. I feel a sense of community, sharing this time with others.”
It is because of volunteers like Nico, that the Canadian Red Cross is able to deliver services to the most vulnerable communities from coast to coast across Canada.
Thank you, Nico.
