The Canadian Red Cross is one of the most active charity organizations in the country. It works to provide people in need with emergency relief in the aftermath of emergencies and disasters, such as hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes and house fires.
The Canadian Red Cross also offers programs focused on violence, bullying and abuse prevention, water safety and first aid and CPR. These programs provide individuals with better interpersonal and communications skills, as well as the ability to react decisively in the aftermath of a major emergency.
When it comes to making these programs accessible and impactful in different communities, the Canadian Red Cross relies on the participation of Canadian youth.
With their passion, dedication and commitment to social change, youth can make valuable contributions to the Canadian Red Cross' efforts on the ground, which is why the Red Cross honours their work each year with the Young Humanitarian Award.
Recipients in the Atlantic province
The Young Humanitarian Award recognizes the spirit of good will and humanitarianism in youth and the work that they have done to benefit others.
In 2013, several young people across the Atlantic provinces of Canada were honoured for their activities with the Canadian Red Cross.
At 14 years old, Cassidy Megan is the youngest recipient of the Young Humanitarian Award, having founded Purple Day - The Global Day of Epilepsy Awareness. In Newfoundland and Labrador, Ashley Gosse received the award for her work on Sleep Out 120, which strives to increase awareness on youth homelessness. In Prince Edward Island, Jenny Vessey was honoured for her volunteer work in Canada and in other parts of the world, and in New Brunswick, Alisha Virmani received an award for her anti-bullying work in the area.
Youth who have made valuable contributions to the Canadian Red Cross' humanitarian efforts by volunteering, engaging in other philanthropic work or demonstrating strong leadership skills are excellent candidates for the Young Humanitarian Award.
If there is a young person who you believe should be recognized for his or her hard work and dedication to creating lasting change, please submit a nomination by Feb. 2, 2014.
Make a difference
Youth in Canada can make an impact in their communities in many ways, from organizing events to volunteering with humanitarian organizations.
Youth who choose to get involved with the Canadian Red Cross can gain access to many programs which will help them create areas of interest, as well as skill development for future jobs and their careers.
If there's a youth in your life that you feel would benefit from getting involved with the Canadian Red Cross, you should urge him or her to explore volunteer opportunities within the organization.
In addition, a contribution to the Canadian Red Cross can help you make a difference in the lives of those in need. Your support will provide people who are affected by emergencies and disasters with vital resources that will allow them to overcome a variety of challenges.
To show your support, please donate online or at your local Canadian Red Cross office today.
