Each year, more than 1,000 people seek assistance from the Canadian Red Cross to reconnect with family members whom they have lost contact with due to armed conflict, natural disasters and other incidents.

As one of the country's leading non-profit organizations, the Canadian Red Cross plays an important role in re-establishing links between loved ones. With the Family Tracing Service, the Canadian Red Cross helps immediate family members restore communication with a missing relative.

How does the Family Tracing Service work?
In order to begin the process of finding family members, people need to place an inquiry with the Canadian Red Cross. To begin the trace, the following information needs to be provided:

The full name of the person to be traced
His or her age or date of birth
The names of the person's father and mother
The last known address
The date of last communication
The reason for the search and separation
Personal information of the inquirer, including name, date of birth and relationship to sought-after individual

What are the benefits of the Family Tracing Service?
When repeated attempts to locate a missing loved one fails, the separation can make an already difficult situation even more stressful for individuals. Losing contact with family following a natural disaster, the outbreak of an armed conflict or as a result of migration is difficult, but the Family Tracing Service provides a way for family members to restore communications.
