The Canadian Red Cross, one of the country's most active non-profit organizations, has been improving water safety in Canada since 1946 and has trained millions of people on swimming and drowning prevention techniques.
Programs provided by the organization give people of all ages the opportunity to advance their skills and to acquire a higher level of knowledge and confidence in the water. Through swimming lessons, the Canadian Red Cross strives to reduce the frequency of aquatic injuries or other safety issues.
Acceptance into the International Life Saving Federation
In 2012, the Canadian Red Cross was accepted as an associate member of the board of directors of the International Life Saving Federation—a move that was fully supported by the Board of the Royal Lifesaving Society of Canada.
This move has made the Canadian Red Cross part of a worldwide movement to prevent drowning and other water-related incidents. Research that the Canadian Red Cross conducts annually on drowning, as well as recent and long-term trends, can help augment the work of the International Life Saving Federation and promote collaboration on other water safety campaigns.
Comprising several different member-nations, the International Life Saving Federation is a worldwide leader in water safety research and attempts to facilitate the exchange of drowning prevention and lifesaving techniques—it also focuses on lifesaving and lifesaving sport, and endeavors to increase water rescue and lifeguarding.
