As one of the most active charity organizations in Canada, the Canadian Red Cross is there to provide assistance during times of crisis to vulnerable people everywhere.
Whether as a result of world health problems like lack of adequate medical care or a shortage of natural resources including clean water and sanitation, Canadian Red Cross' services work to bridge the gap between inequality and empower individuals with the strength to overcome setbacks.
On April 5, 2013, the international community marked the 1,000-day milestone to the 2015 target date for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Established by the United Nations, the tenets of the MDGs are aimed toward reducing the prevalence of diseases like malaria and polio, as well as improving maternal, newborn and child health.
Red Cross improves maternal health
One of the ways in which the Canadian Red Cross is committed to obtaining the 2015 goal for MDGs is through maternal health and wellness programs.
In Honduras, Bolivia, Mali, Liberia, Kenya, Nicaragua and Pakistan, the Canadian Red Cross has partnered with Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies to promote greater access to healthcare, nutritional assistance, family planning services and disease prevention and treatment for women, newborns, infants and children. These efforts also help to reduce the prevalence of infant and child mortality.
Other goals as outlined by MDGs include eliminating extreme hunger and combating poverty; learning more about environmental sustainability; developing primary education resources; and forging international partnerships for the greater good.
Take action
Each day, tens of thousands of people around the world are affected by poverty, emergencies and disasters that can result in challenging circumstances for years to come.
The Canadian Red Cross works to support communities in improving their own health and lives, and to provide people with the resources they'll need to overcome life-changing incidents.
With the help of generous Canadians like you, the Canadian Red Cross is able to better meet the needs of those living in difficult situations and give them access to the programs they'll need to acquire greater skills and health.
Take action today by showing your support for the humanitarian work of the Red Cross. You can donate online or by visiting your local office to learn more details.
