The Canadian Red Cross is an active charity organization that works to help people who have been impacted by emergencies and disasters both in Canada and around the world.
The impact on the ground that the Canadian Red Cross makes can transform the lives of people who are affected by hardships. The resources they can gain through Red Cross programs can provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to recover.
The Goolamally family's story
Zahreen Bibi, her husband and their eight-month-old baby were in their apartment in Montreal, Quebec, when the fire alarm went off in their 75-unit building.
Needing to evacuate immediately, Zahreen, who was only wearing house slippers at the time, left the house without grabbing items for their infant.
Thanks to the Red Cross, the Goolamally family, among other residents in the building, were directed to a community centre where Red Cross volunteers were waiting to provide support.
Once there, they received hygiene kits, as well as diapers, milk and cereal for their baby. They were later provided with hotel accommodations, and 12 days after the fire occurred, they were able to return home.
Still, the Goolamally family remembers the help the Canadian Red Cross provided during their most urgent hour of need.
"My family and I received all of the support we could have hoped for from the Red Cross," said Zahreen. "We are very grateful to the Red Cross and to its dedicated staff. We appreciate the excellent work that you do every day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"
