Emergencies and disasters often take a great toll on a country's livelihood, resulting in significant problems for people in these areas.

As one of the most active non-profit organizations in Canada, the Canadian Red Cross is ready to assist people affected by such incidents. By striving to give people the resources they require during times of misfortune, the Canadian Red Cross makes an impact on the ground.

For Mathieu Léonard, an experienced worker, supporting relief operations in Jamaica to Hurricane Sandy-affected communities provided him the opportunity to help those in need.

Mathieu's story
Delivering assistance to communities that have been impacted by disasters is one of the most important roles of the Canadian Red Cross, and as a delegate for the organization, Mathieu has witnessed firsthand the kind of work that gives hope to those whose lives have been destroyed.

"Although Hurricane Sandy only hit Jamaica as a Category One, I was shocked by the extent of the damage, trees were broken everywhere, electric lines down and houses were destroyed just like the stronger hurricanes I had previously witnessed," said Mathieu.

In response to Hurricane Sandy, the Red Cross Movement worked with communities to provide relief, health and shelter support.

"One of the first people I met lost his plantain crops, and pigs, which he sold in the market," said Mathieu. "He worries about making ends meet before his crops grow back, which could take upwards of a year."
