The Canadian Red Cross is a charity organization committed to responding to the humanitarian needs of people around the world. In the Sahel region of Africa, where widespread food shortages placed additional stress on communities, the need for assistance was great.

Eighteen million people in seven different countries were affected by a food and nutritional crisis including countries like Burkina Faso, Mali and Senegal.

For those in Mali, where conflict is present, pressures on the local population grew more intense. With the Canadian Red Cross' support, those on the ground were able to gain help when they've needed it most.

Feeding body and spirit
The food crisis in the Sahel region was complex. Residents of the Sahel frequently rely on livestock and irrigating the land for sustenance, but with a lack of rainfall, families had to look for other means of supporting themselves.

The Red Cross Movement focused on saving lives, protecting and recovering livelihoods and building resilience for future food crises across the region.  The Canadian Red Cross provided support to emergency Red Cross operations in the Sahel, and helped individuals develop community gardens and gain equipment and resources to yield better crops from the land.

Make a difference
The Canadian Red Cross provides ongoing humanitarian support in many countries around the world, including Mali. During emergencies and disasters, when incidents strike and impact the health of people in need, the Canadian Red Cross is there to provide programs that can help empower individuals to overcome challenges.
