As an active non-profit organization, the Canadian Red Cross plays a significant role in responding to the needs of men, women and children across the globe who are impacted by emergencies and world health problems.
In countries like Chad, a cholera outbreak creates health issues, but with help from the Canadian Red Cross, people in need gain access to healthcare services needed to recover.
Helping those in need
The cholera outbreak in Chad affected more than half of the 61 districts in the country. According to the Ministry of Health, as of September 2011, more than 12,700 people were impacted by the illness, while more than 360 deaths were reported.
"People in Chad are facing a serious health crisis," said Karine Farrell, manager of disaster preparedness and response with the Canadian Red Cross. "Thanks to the Government of Canada, we not only have the equipment but a team of trained health professionals we can mobilize rapidly to support this operation."
The Canadian Red Cross joined forces with the French Red Cross to provide relief on the ground, including building latrines, disinfecting water points and handing out soap and other hygienic materials to people in need. Educating people about the risks of transmission has been another effort that the Canadian Red Cross undertook to prevent the spread of the disease.
