From forest fires to flooding, natural disasters can occur at any moment, but the Canadian Red Cross - an active charity organization - is ready to respond at a moment's notice with assistance that can benefit those in need.
In Thunder Bay, Ontario, a combination of heavy rains and sewage back-up resulted in flooding and forced the city to declare a state of emergency in May 2012. While many families were affected by the disaster, with help from the Canadian Red Cross, those impacted by the crisis have received much-needed aid.
The Canadian Red Cross in Thunder Bay
The damage in Thunder Bay has resulted in one of the largest Red Cross responses in Ontario in more than a decade, as the organization mobilizes to assist families affected by the incident.
"The Red Cross has been in Thunder Bay since the start of the emergency, but this situation is far from over," said Mike Morton, director of disaster management for the Canadian Red Cross in Ontario. "Consider that more than 3,000 homes are affected, and many have been flooded knee-deep with sewage water. Add to that, more than 400 homes did not have insurance. The community is in tremendous need of support right now."
More than 100 volunteers with training in flood response were deployed to Thunder Bay in the aftermath of the incident to assist with operations on the ground. The Canadian Red Cross has worked with the City of Thunder Bay to assess the damage in affected homes by going door to door.
In addition, the Canadian Red Cross opened a shelter to provide relief to families left homeless due to the flooding and has provided comfort kits - including personal hygiene products and other materials - and clean-up kits to those in need.
