Getting active outdoors is one of the major perks of summertime - that is, until injuries, bug bites or sunburns get in the way. But with a stocked first aid kit and a little bit of know-how, warm weather mishaps can be treated before they get serious.

First Aid and CPR training from the Canadian Red Cross provides simple instruction on a number of techniques that may save a life. Moreover, obtaining this kind of standardized training may give individuals the confidence they need to step in and help when an emergency occurs.

In addition to obtaining training from a credible organization, like the Red Cross, people should keep a stocked kit full of supplies to disinfect, soothe and protect bites, burns and wounds. Emergency phone numbers, sterile gauze pads, adhesive tape, bandages, scissors, tweezers, safety pins, ice packs, disposable non-latex gloves and antiseptic wipes are among the basic components of a first aid kit.

Heat-related illnesses are another warm weather hazard. Signs of heat exhaustion include pale or red skin, dizziness, nausea, moist skin, weakness, exhaustion and a normal or raised body temperature. First aid for this condition includes calling 911, moving the affected person to a cool location and drinking small sips of cold fluids.
