Celebrated on October 17, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is an effort by the global community to commemorate and drive awareness of the struggles that those living in poverty face each day.

Observed since 1993 by the United Nations, the event calls for worldwide leaders to enact real change within their countries by engaging vulnerable persons living in impoverished circumstances and other people within the community to come together and discuss ways that poverty can be eliminated in every community.

Internationally, the Canadian Red Cross responds to emergencies worldwide, has a presence in more than 60 countries in 2011 and oversees work directly in 14. Many of these programs help to improve basic health conditions, water and sanitation projects in the region and provide training for primary healthcare or existing agencies to better serve within their communities.

For migrants and refugees who resettle in Canada, regional programs such as First Contact, which is available in Ontario and Vancouver, British Columbia, provide them with information on affordable housing and how to acquire aid or social assistance, which could alleviate the tremendous strain of poverty.

For those in need within the country, the Canadian Red Cross offers several vital programs that help provide assistance to those who may not have access to the essential tools they need to survive, including medical equipment.

How widespread is poverty throughout Canada? According to Canada without Poverty, in 2011 approximately 851,014 Canadians accessed food banks each month, while in 2010, approximately 3.1 million households dedicated more than 30 per cent of their income to housing.

Health Equipment Loan Programs (HELP) are available in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and the Atlantic region and empower Canadians who suffer from serious medical conditions to lead independent and active lifestyles through the use of equipment provided by the Red Cross.

The financial impact of a major illness can leave many people reeling from such a significant burden, but through the HELP - Short Term Loan Service, health equipment including wheelchairs, walkers and bathroom aids can be provided to vulnerable Canadians over a short-term period.

In addition, the Aids to Independent Living Program, which operates in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, along with the Children's Medical Equipment Recycling and Loan Program can provide medical equipment for children and adults with medical conditions.
