Red Cross helps youth adapt to the effects of climate change

From floods and forest fires to storms and droughts, climate change impacts disasters – increasing their frequency and damage.

In Canada, the threat of weather-related emergencies and the potential toll they could take on individuals, communities and infrastructure makes climate change one of the most important issues within the country.

Helping those in need

Vulnerable individuals who live in areas prone to natural disasters are often the most impacted by emergencies and disasters caused by climate change. In many cases, those people who lack the necessary resources to relocate, or to adapt to the challenges of climate change, are left to grapple with the worst consequences that a disaster may leave behind.

When it comes to responding to these individuals and other communities, the Canadian Red Cross is there to provide urgently needed support, relief and assistance for those in need. 

Youth involvement

The Canadian Red Cross offers one of the largest disaster preparedness and relief networks in the world, yet it's with the participation of passionate and motivated youth that we are able to continue to offer some of most significant relief programs available.

Volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross can be a great way for young people to build lasting friendships, make a difference in the community and the lives of vulnerable people, as well as gain hands-on experience educating others about the risks of climate change.

Volunteering internationally

In addition to the Canadian Red Cross' dynamic volunteer options and efforts to raise awareness about climate change, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has sought to improve its response to weather-related emergencies through its Climate Centre in the Netherlands, which strives to address the humanitarian and physical impact of extreme weather events caused by climate change.

The Climate Centre has developed an excellent and impactful way to engage young people in the efforts to promote climate change education. Through the Young Scholars program, the Climate Centre has helped connect passionate youth with members of the Red Cross, Red Crescent Movement to answer the humanitarian needs, raise awareness about climate change and improve disaster preparedness.
