The Canadian Red Cross is a leading nonprofit organization in the country that is recognized for responding to the needs of affected communities during natural disasters, emergencies and other times of need. In order to achieve the most flexible and comprehensive services domestically and internationally, the Canadian Red Cross is supported by a large network of volunteers. While the Canadian Red Cross engages volunteers of all ages, the participation of young people who are passionate about social change is important to the organization.
The benefits of youth participation
Youth have the opportunity to be a part of essential programs within Canada and around the world.
There are a variety of ways that young people can also raise funds for specific programs of the Canadian Red Cross, such as organizing car washes, concerts, sporting events and other fundraisers within their communities. This allows young people to play a crucial role in the Red Cross' efforts to provide humanitarian relief to those in need. Volunteering can also be a great way to make valuable connections with others, gain emergency preparedness and job skills, as well as make a difference.
The power of social media
According to a recent poll conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross, 54 per cent of Canadians would use social media websites, like Facebook and Twitter, to alert friends or family of an emergency situation, while 63 per cent believe that disaster and emergency response agencies - including fire and police departments - should respond to requests for help placed on such sites.
This remarkable poll reveals the extent to which social media platforms are used by Canadians, as well as the importance of knowing how to access them.
Young people who are accustomed to using sites daily can be a tremendous resource to the Red Cross, by helping monitor social networking websites, delivering updates regarding emergency situations and responding to questions of those in need during times of urgency. They can also help spread the word about the Red Cross' services around the globe!
The Young Humanitarian award
Youth who become involved with charity organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross have the opportunity to learn new skills and build valuable friendships. Former Prince Edward Island resident Scotty Joe Smith was recently awarded a Young Humanitarian award by the Canadian Red Cross. Smith is currently working in the Dominican Republic as a missionary with the Latin American Mission Program.
The Young Humanitarian Award is given annually to young people who demonstrate the humanitarian values of the Canadian Red Cross within their communities through volunteering, advocacy and leadership skills.
