Knowing how to deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also referred to as CPR, is one of the most important skills a person can develop, but according to a recent poll by the Canadian Red Cross - the country's leading non-profit organization - the majority of Canadians say they wouldn't feel confident performing this life-saving technique in the event of an emergency.
"In half a day you can learn the skills necessary to save a life," said Don Marentette, national manager of first aid programs with the Canadian Red Cross. "Only 15 per cent of Canadians say they are confident they can help someone suffering from a cardiac emergency, and that's just not enough."
The role of the Canadian Red Cross
For over 50 years, the Canadian Red Cross has offered First Aid and CPR programs that provide people with the confidence and knowledge needed to react quickly in the face of a major incident.
As the only national organization that incorporates automated external defibrillator (AED) training in its CPR curriculum, the classes provided by the Canadian Red Cross offer a distinct advantage to individuals who want to learn more about responding to emergencies, either in the workplace or at home.
"Knowing what to do in those critical minutes can save a life," Marentette added. "CPR, when used with an automated external defibrillator (AED), and started immediately after cardiac arrest, can double a person's chance of surviving a heart attack."
The impact of CPR
Emergency medics play a crucial role in providing life-saving aid to those in need, but in urban areas, the average response time is eight minutes. If a person has lost consciousness, it only takes four to six minutes after they have stopped breathing for permanent brain damage to occur.
As a result, paramedics across the country are urging Canadians to take advantage of First Aid and CPR courses, understanding the critical effect that intervention can have for those who have suffered from cardiac arrest or another serious medical issue.
