Over 88,000 households impacted by Hurricane Fiona provided with assistance from Canadian Red Cross
Ottawa | November 25, 2022
Phone registration will close December 2, more than two months after disaster
The Canadian Red Cross has provided assistance to more than 88,000 households throughout Atlantic Canada who were impacted by the hurricane-force post-tropical storm Fiona. Those who have not yet registered with the organization can do so up until Friday, December 2, 2022. Households already registered do not need to register again.
With the vast number of households impacted by Fiona, it is important for people to know that not every registered household will receive Red Cross financial assistance. Financial assistance provided through the Red Cross, thanks to the generous donations of Canadians and the matching funds from the Government of Canada, is intended to help those unable to meet urgent, basic needs because of the storm. However, for any household registered, Red Cross teams can help provide referrals for community resources, local crisis and mental health supports, or other professional support services.
To date, the Canadian Red Cross has raised $31 million, not including government matching funds, for the Hurricane Fiona in Canada Appeal. Almost all donated and matched funds received by the Red Cross have been fully expended or committed.
In addition to providing financial assistance, to date, the Canadian Red Cross has:
- Provided emergency shelter to more than 1,200 individuals.
- Provided support at 40 reception centers and/or shelters in partnership with local authorities.
- Provided more than 5,700 emergency items to impacted individuals and communities, including hygiene kits, cots, blankets and teddy bears for children.
- Conducted more than 6,000 conversations for psychosocial or well-being support.
- Mobilized more than 520 personnel to support the response.
Discussions are continuing with government officials in all provinces impacted by the storm to determine how the Red Cross may be able to assist with any remaining appeal funds after people with urgent, basic needs have been assisted. If funds allow, additional assistance provided by the Red Cross will compliment government programs.
Households not yet registered with the Red Cross can call 1-800-863-6582 before 5:00 p.m. (AST) Friday, December 2, after which registration will be closed.
