Massive wildfires have triggered the largest fire-related evacuation in Alberta history with more than 70,000 individuals displaced due to evacuation orders. People have been forced to leave their homes in more than 12 northern communities, including Fort McMurray.
“Forest fires have devastated entire communities in Northern Alberta,” says Jean-Philippe Tizi, Vice-President, Emergency Management, for the Canadian Red Cross. "Our teams are currently mobilizing to support affected people, families and communities in any way that help is needed.”
Here in Canada and overseas, the Red Cross stands ready to help people before, during and after a disaster. As a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement – which is made up of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 190 national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies – the Canadian Red Cross is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and throughout the world.
