$500 will be provided to households most in need

Thanks to the generosity of Canadians who have contributed to the Canadian Red Cross Hurricane Fiona in Canada Appeal, the Red Cross is providing $500 in financial assistance to households most impacted by the hurricane-force post-tropical storm that hit on September 23-24, 2022.

Starting next week, Canadian Red Cross will begin distribution of funds to eligible households from the most impacted areas that have registered with the organization and are unable to meet their basic needs as a result of the hurricane.

This assistance will be provided to those most in need in the following areas:
  • Prince Edward Island

  • The following areas in Nova Scotia:
    • Antigonish County
    • Cape Breton Regional Municipality
    • Colchester County
    • Cumberland County
    • Guysborough County
    • Inverness County
    • Pictou County
    • Richmond County
    • Victoria County

  • The following areas in Newfoundland and Labrador:
    • Channel-Port Aux Basques
    • Margaree-Fox Roost
    • Rose Blanche – Harbour le Cou
    • Diamond Cove
    • Burnt Islands
    • Burgeo
    • Isle aux Morts
    • Grand Bay East

The areas of eligibility were determined in collaboration with local authorities.

People who have not yet registered with the Red Cross are encouraged to do so by calling 1-800-863-6582 between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. ADT, or by going online at www.redcross.ca/hurricanefiona to either register online or find the reception centre nearest them.

Please note: If a person living in one of the areas listed above has already registered with the Red Cross online, over the phone, or in person they should not register again. Once a Red Cross registration number has been received by a household for Hurricane Fiona that household is considered registered and does not need to do so again. Any duplicate registrations may delay the process as additional validation will be needed.

QUOTE
“Canadian Red Cross teams have been working hard to support people before and after the devastating impacts of Hurricane Fiona. We understand that recovering after a disaster can be difficult and hope these funds will help those most affected by this hurricane to meet their urgent needs. As recovery continues, the Red Cross will be there to help support and guide people along the way.”
