First Aid Training

The Canadian Red Cross has delivered Prevention & Safety education programs for over 80 years. Our current programs provide injury prevention, harm reduction, wellness and safety education for youth and adults in a variety of disciplines.

Red Cross First Aid courses meet all federal/provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards (except Quebec), and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z1210-17 First Aid training for the workplace – Curriculum and quality management for training agencies.

The Canadian Red Cross relies on public donations, corporate partnerships, public grants, and program revenue. In times of disaster or conflict, the Red Cross may launch an appeal for cash donations to support relief work in that area. Thanks to our donors, we can carry out development programs such as the establishment of primary health care programs, water and sanitation projects, while increasing the resiliency of families and communities against future disaster or conflict situations.

No matter where or when, the Red Cross is almost always first on the scene of disaster. Local volunteers are on the ground in 191 countries ready to save lives at a moment’s notice.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, in 2022-2023:

260,000+ people in Canada were supported by the Red Cross after disasters, including wildfires, floods, and severe storms.
12,000+ Canadians trained in disaster preparedness training.
291 Indigenous communities and organizations supported by our Indigenous Help Desk.
457,000+ individuals were trained on opioid poisoning emergencies and 10,233 naloxone kits were distributed.
1,206 participants in 37 Indigenous communities/organizations joined in the Indigenous Injury Prevention Safety Program. The program reached 23 new communities and two new provinces/territories.
22,000+ relief items were sent from Canada as aid following the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.
$127+ million in financial contributions to global Red Cross Crescent efforts.

All of this work would not be possible without our 637,088 donors and partners – including 97,392 monthly supporters.

Health Equipment Loan Program

The Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) provides health equipment to individuals recovering from illness or injury, empowering them to live with independence and dignity.

HELP is a volunteer-supported, community-based service made possible through the support of, provincial governments, health authorities, donations of used equipment, donor contributions, and the efforts of thousands of volunteers and professional staff. Canadian Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Programs operate in British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Yukon

The Basic Health Equipment Loan Program

This program involves equipment needed for three months or less. It assists people recovering from injury, illness or mobility issues. It allows people to return home from hospital earlier and supports individuals in palliative care who wish to spend their final days in the comfort of their own home.

Community Health Equipment Services

The Canadian Red Cross operates several equipment programs including:

The Long Term Loans Program which provides home health and mobility equipment like wheelchairs and bathing aids to individuals with chronic but stable conditions in B.C.’s Lower Mainland for as long as the equipment is needed.
The Bed Loan Program which provides loans of home-use electric hospital beds to eligible Atlantic Canadians for as long as needed. Bed delivery, pick up, and installation by a technician is provided in Nova Scotia and some parts of PEI,and Newfoundland and Labrador. In New Brunswick, eligible clients can pick up the units at a local service centre.
The Advanced Short Term Loans Program which augments the short-term loan program by providing delivery and technician installation of advanced equipment such as beds and lifts in British Columbia.
The HELP – Specialized Equipment Program which provides customized mobility aids and specialized mattresses to Nova Scotians residing in Long- Term Care facilities and to eligible seniors living in New Brunswick.
The HELP – Community Health Equipment Loans Program which provides three-month loans of home health and mobility equipment to residents of PEI, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. For people in New Brunswick, the equipment can be borrowed for as long as needed.
