The Canadian Red Cross has a long and proud history of working with First Nations communities in Saskatchewan. We work closely with First Nations agencies, communities and governments to establish sound relationships based on mutual respect and trust.
Our goals in working with First Nations people are no different than working with any other Saskatchewan community – we help residents prepare for and respond to disasters, we provide education and training on issues like bullying, we offer injury prevention training in the form of first aid and babysitting course, and so on.
Our objectives are the same too - to help communities to develop their own capacity and resilience to recover from disasters and create safe environments for all, especially children and youth.
However, we also recognize the diversity of First Nations communities – their individual languages, customs and cultures; their community history; and also the impact geography has on communities, especially those in remote locations. We work with each community individually to better understand their own particular issues, needs and goals.
One key priority is to increase the number of trained First Nations volunteers with the Red Cross across the province so that it reflects the overall Aboriginal population in Saskatchewan, which is approximately around 18%.
