Georgia Morgan, of Regina, Saskatchewan, has discovered volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross to be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for a retiree, like herself.
Georgia is a Safety and Wellbeing responder and Emergency Response Team volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross. She began volunteering with the Red Cross in July 2021.
“I retired with the idea that I wanted to be the volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross,” she said. “I wanted to be able to give back to the community and provide some service and help.”
Volunteers are crucial to the work of the Canadian Red Cross. Without their time and efforts, the Red Cross would not be able to do the humanitarian work that it does.
Georgia started serving with the Red Cross locally, with the hopes of helping a disaster response. A week after coming on board with the Red Cross, she was deployed to a disaster response in Saskatoon to assist Northern Saskatchewan wildfire evacuees.
She found it gratifying to help people get the assistance they need during a disaster response. She appreciated being able to give someone in distress a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on.
“It’s very heart fulfilling. I just love it,” Georgia said. “This is self gratification for me. I like to help people, and this is the way to do it. I like to be able to provide a service to others. It almost sounds selfish, in a way, because, for me, I am getting the benefit of their gratitude and their grace in whatever they receive.”
In responding to a disaster, Georgia was able to remain flexible to ensure people received the support they needed.
“You must be comfortable with change. Things can change quickly.”
The Red Cross needs more local heroes like Georgia who are ready to volunteer their time to help people impacted by disasters. If you are interested in being a part of the team, you can find out more at https://www.redcross.ca/volunteer.
