Prevention & Safety

The Canadian Red Cross continued to offer its First Aid courses with its training partners using a blended model of online and in-person training when appropriate in 2021-22 to meet the needs of Albertans. In the province, 137,755 people learned first aid and 515 people learned Psychological First Aid.

Similarly, Swimming and Water Safety training courses provided recommendations on how to best offer safe swimming lessons where possible, while still meeting provincial health restrictions. People dove back into the water with 83,710 people taking courses.

In January, the Canadian Red Cross announced it was transitioning swimming and lifeguard training to Lifesaving Society Canada to direct more attention to surging humanitarian demands in other areas, such as disaster and pandemic response, opioid harm reduction, and caregiving for seniors. The exception is in First Nations communities where the training will continue as part of the Red Cross Indigenous People’s Framework.

Prevention and Safety staff, training partners and volunteers are committed to the ongoing work with communities to provide support and expertise where needed.
