The IHL Program

The Canadian Red Cross aims to protect the dignity and lives of people affected by armed conflict by encouraging respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in Canada and around the world through education, training, and advocacy.

3 pillars which include IHL education, capacity strengthening, and advocacy.

IHL Education

The Canadian Red Cross helps build awareness of the Rules of Armed Conflict and IHL-related issues to academia, teachers, and youth. We organize events across the country to engage people on the importance of IHL and to encourage dialogue on issues such as refugees, child soldiers, sexual and gender-based violence and attacks on civilians, hospitals, and schools.

The Canadian Red Cross helps disseminate International Humanitarian Law (IHL) to government bodies, the armed forces, academia, policy makers, teachers, and youth. We hold events across the country every year in collaboration with partners to help educate people on the importance of IHL and to foster conversation on today’s challenges and debates.

Academic Conferences and Webinars

The Canadian Red Cross and its university partners organize public academic conferences across Canada to engage in dialogue with students, professors, and other professionals on various issues related to IHL.

Teacher Trainings and Webinars

We work with school boards, teacher associations and teacher champions to organize professional development opportunities for high school teachers across the country.

IHL Summer School  Since 2014, the Canadian Red Cross organizes an annual, bilingual IHL Summer School in collaboration with the Human Rights Research and Education Centre at the University of Ottawa.

Training & Capacity Strengthening

A Red Cross staff member helps to build the capacity of members of the military.
We develop and provide training to strengthen existing capacities to ensure the principles of IHL are implemented in practice by the armed forces, the police, policymakers, civil society, CRC staff and members of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Humanitarian Diplomacy & Advocacy

Humanitarian workers use humanitarian diplomacy to advocate for those affected by conflict.
Through confidential dialogue, formal presentations, law and policy reviews and public campaigns, the CRC engages nationally and internationally in humanitarian diplomacy and advocacy aimed at persuading authorities and civil societies to act in the interests of vulnerable people affected by conflict and violence.
