Canadian Red Cross Emergency Management volunteer Ha Vu’s interest in philanthropy led her to become a Red Cross Walmart ambassador. During the month-long campaign to raise funds for disaster preparedness, training, and responses in Canada, Ha does regular check-ins at her designated Walmart store - where she thanks Associates for their support. Originally from Vietnam, Ha is attending St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she studies technology and entrepreneurship.
“Every dollar donated matters to help people recovering from disasters. In addition, donating spreads love and empathy in the community,” said Ha.
Because of her Interest in retail operations, volunteering at Walmart means professional development for Ha as well.
“The store manager has been very friendly and supportive. We try to do everything we can for a successful campaign.”
Ha also dedicates time to other organizations in the Halifax area: the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 and Nova Scotia Business Inc., as a global advisor for market entry. Volunteering has given her a meaningful way to connect to her community. In Vietnam she helped youth with their personal and career development and spent time helping underprivileged children in rural areas.
“I’ve met a lot of great people over the years. I want to be a role model for my child so our next generation can have a better and stronger society.”
For the month of July, Walmart customers were invited to donate to Red Cross at the checkout in stores. Walmart Canada will also contribute an additional $1 million to help communities in need, in addition to the donated funds.
Support from Walmart, its Associates, and customers, is vital to the Red Cross as more frequent and complex emergencies arise, and community support is needed both during and after emergencies and disasters.
Walmart Canada is the largest corporate partner of the Canadian Red Cross. Since 2003, Walmart has contributed over $60 million in support of disaster preparedness and relief funding.
