Transmission of COVID-19 in healthcare facilities in Saskatchewan’s most northern region has been limited thanks, in part, to a federal government funding program administered by the Canadian Red Cross.
“We’ve been pretty careful and pretty lucky so far,” said Bev Peel, Director of Special Projects for the Athabasca Health Authority.
The Health Authority, which serves 5,000 people in the province’s far north, has used funds distributed by the Red Cross to purchase personal protective equipment to help keep their staff and clients, healthy.
“I think it’s thanks to all the protection that we have. The gloves, masks and sanitizer – all of that has really helped,” said Peel.
The personal protective equipment is being used at the regional hospital, five community clinics and during home visits. Some supplies have also been provided to community members while ensuring the Health Authority maintains an inventory for future use.
Funding for the project comes from the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund.
From October 5 through October 30, 2020, a second round of programming is available to community-based organizations which are providing critical support to those most in need during COVID-19. The Red Cross is offering two programs: Granting Program for Non-profits and Personal Protective Equipment & Training to Prevent Disease Transmission.
