How to make an emergency kit for your car

Behind a steering wheel on a snowy day. Text reads stay safe on winter roads. For many Canadians, the last few weeks have reminded us of just how much winter can throw our way. Big storms and serious cold can make winter driving go from challenging to scary pretty quickly, so it’s important to be prepared.

Before hitting the road, be sure to check local reports and avoid travel when weather advisories call for it.

But we all know that conditions can change pretty rapidly, and emergencies can happen at any time -  that’s why it’s a great plan to have an emergency kit ready in your car! You can even buy a Roadside Safety Kit from our online shop.

What goes into a kit? Here are some ideas to get you started:
  • Water
  • Non-perishable food
  • A warm blanket
  • Extra clothing and shoes – including hats and gloves or mitts
  • Road maps – cell phones do not always operate properly in extreme cold, so it is best not to plan to rely on them when you need directions
  • Shovel and ice scraper
  • Extra windshield fluid
  • Kitty litter or sand
  • A first aid kit
  • Flashlight – if battery operated don’t forget to include extra batteries
  • Jumper cable or battery pack
  • Road flares
  • Work gloves
  • De-icer
  • If you are not wearing your winter boots in the car, bring them along with you in case they are needed.

This should have your kit off to a great start, but take some time to think about additional items that might be needed for you and your family. Tell us what you make sure is in your kit.
