Uganda is currently facing one of the world’s largest refugee crises. As the host country with the largest refugee population in Africa, Uganda hosts an estimated 1.3 million refugees from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi. New arrivals come every day, of which the vast majority are women and children.

As shown in these photos, water scarcity is a serious concern, with households waiting for water to arrive by water trucks. The Red Cross runs the Kochi Artesian Well water production site from which clean water is provided to Bidibidi camp.

The Uganda Red Cross Society is a lead organization providing humanitarian assistance to refugees in Uganda. The Canadian Red Cross visited operations assisting South Sudanese refugees in Bidibidi and Imvepi camps in October 2017. Frontline Red Cross teams and volunteers are the strength of the response. With support from the Government of Canada, we continue to support the response in 2018.
