Raising awareness of Restoring Family Links

Losing touch with family members is common following disasters or conflicts. Communication lines get broken, families get dispersed and there’s no way of getting in touch. Often, families don’t even know where to start, or if their relatives are even alive.

The Chilean Red Cross is drawing attention to the Restoring Family Links program, a core humanitarian activity of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement that helps reunite families separated by conflict or disaster.

The radio campaign features two family members sharing their stories of separation at the same time, one through the left speaker and the other through the right. Their stories are similar, except for where they are located now.

The Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement is in a unique position to help reunite families thanks to its global and local reach in 189 countries, its Fundamental Principles and long standing expertise in delivering this service.

The Restoring Family Links program helps people re-establish contact with their family members after separation in circumstances such as natural disasters or conflict. The program uses the connection of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement to successfully reconnect hundreds of families each year. The Canadian Red Cross helps about 1,250 families per year living in Canada try and make contact with loved ones separated by conflict of humanitarian crisis.

If you’re interested in helping people find lost loved ones, consider volunteering for this program or donating to the Red Cross.
