Red Cross Presents Wisdom of the North Photo Exhibition at Nuit Blanche

Guest post by Jamie-Leigh Cuthbertson, volunteer

This year, as part of Toronto’s art event Scotiabank Nuit Blanche held on October 4, Northern Ontario First Nation communities will be occupying space in downtown Toronto’s media-saturated entertainment district - front and centre, in a dramatic display contrasting the city’s busy streetscape.

The Canadian Red Cross is presenting #RedCrossNuit Wisdom of the North, a collection of images by Canadian photographer and Red Cross volunteer Johan Hallberg-Campbell, curated by Patrick Macaulay.

The photo exhibition features engaging portraits, vast landscapes, and touching personal moments that reflect First Nation communities in Northern Ontario, specifically Moose Cree and Attawapiskat, presented on 8'x8' displays.

The outdoor photo exhibition will be placed at the corner of King and John Streets, across from the Princess of Wales theatre, in an effort to bring attention to these communities. The streetscape location of these images will push past the boundaries of how an audience customarily looks at photographic images.

Johan Hallberg-Campbell has volunteered with the Canadian Red Cross for the past few years and has travelled to First Nation communities to help photograph disaster response and highlights from the Red Cross partnerships with the communities, including the opening of the Red Cross satellite office in Moose Cree last year.

The Canadian Red Cross not only provides relief to First Nation communities in times of disaster, but also works to build capacity and resilience through its Strength and Spirit campaign, which aims to raise $1.5 million to support First Nation communities in preventing injuries, decreasing incidents of violence and abuse, and responding to emergency situations.
