Calgarians race against the clock for disaster preparedness

As part of a three-week in-store fundraising campaign in August to support local Red Cross disaster relief, Walmart Canada and the Canadian Red Cross teamed up for Build-a-Kit Challenge, which took place August 26th in Calgary, to help inform as to what is needed to survive for the first 72 hours after a disaster strikes.

During the Build-a-Kit challenge, contestants had 30 minutes to assemble a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit using everyday items. See photos below from the challenge which took place in the Westbrook Mall Walmart.

Thank you to Walmart Canada and its customers for supporting the Canadian Red Cross! The in-store campaign, which ran from August 2-29 in Walmart stores across the country, helps build the capacity of the Red Cross disaster management team by enabling Red Cross to recruit and train volunteers as well as preposition supplies and resources for disaster responses.

Be Ready! If you don't have a disaster preparedness kit, here is a checklist to help you be prepared.

Shopping carts are ready at the start line!

And the shopping is underway!

Teams fill their carts with useful items.

After carts are filled, the judges take notes of what was gathered.
