Top tips for boating safety

Red Cross boating safety staff have been on the road visiting lakes, beaches and other bodies of water throughout the Atlantic provinces this summer. They've been busy promoting boating and water safety, offering presentations and boating safety checks, a program supported by Transport Canada.

These Red Cross summer staffers have been tweeting about their travels and experiences through @boatsafeatl and we wanted to share some of their helpful tips and photos to help you stay safe this long weekend if you plan to flock to water for cooling, fun and sport. You can also check out these safety resources and tips from the Canadian Red Cross.

Below our boating and water safety staff share some notable moments in spreading water safety awareness.

  1. Ensure you have Canadian-approved flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for everyone on board.
  1. Every year, 525 Canadians die from water-related fatalities and wearing a lifejacket could eliminate up to 90% of all boating related drownings. The Canadian Red Cross water safety mascot, Buckles, joins the team to show the importance of lifejackets and PFDs.
  1. Enter water safely, especially in open bodies of water – be mindful of currents and water temperatures.
  1. Check your safety gear before leaving – for boats, you are required by law to carry marine safety equipment along with your Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

Big thank you to the boating safety team (@boatsafeatl) for their work in increasing awareness of water safety this summer!
