The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

HAITI: A new epidemic has struck the small island country of Haiti. Since the confirmation of cases of chikungunya by Haiti’s MSPP, more than 39,000 cases have been confirmed, 70 per cent in the West department. The MSPP has teamed up with the Haitian Red Cross to reinforce community interventions and awareness to stop the spread of this disease. Since there is no vaccine for this disease, prevention is key and the Red Cross, in collaboration with the IFRC, has begun disseminating messages to the population on how to prevent this disease, to recognise its symptoms, and how to treat it.

UKRAINE: Despite the ongoing violence in eastern Ukraine, ICRC staff have reached the city of Krasnyi Lyman in Donetsk region, where more than 5,000 displaced civilians who arrived last week are in need of assistance.  The ICRC is supporting the delivery of hygiene kits, food, and health care for more than 1,000 people.
