Guest post by Diana Coulter, information officer for the Canadian Red Cross Alberta floods operation.
As the Alberta Flood anniversary approaches, we at Red Cross are naturally focused on the work still ahead of us. That’s because we know hundreds of families are still struggling to recover. Even now, people arrive at our offices with heartbreaking stories. Often, their financial credit is maxed out and they don’t know where else to turn. In the midst of this need, it can be tough to take time to recognize everything that’s already been accomplished during the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Flood response. But of course, that’s equally important. So today, Red Cross says a special thank you to all the staff and volunteers who work so hard to help others.
The efforts of Red Crossers on the ground in Alberta haven't gone unnoticed in the affected communities. In fact, one year later, the thanks are still coming in: with greeting cards, home-made drawings, on a blanket covered in signatures, or with stuffed animals, home-baking and sweets.
It’s wonderful feedback that we want to share today, as we say thanks again for contributing to the flood response.
The first email below arrived just this week:
Email from a Calgary community association:
“(A Red Cross caseworker) has tirelessly gone door to door in our community to find those in need. Her disposition, her smile and her way with people has allowed those in need to open their doors, talk to her and find a friend....I do not write these letters often, but when I find a gem, who is such a joy to work with, I felt it worthy...You have a rare person...The relationship we have with Red Cross is now strong and one of trust because of (this caseworker). I want you to know that Red Cross is always welcome in our neighbourhoods, and we can only hope that one day we can reciprocate...”
Greeting card for Canmore/Bragg Creek caseworker:
"Thank you for your assistance through Red Cross. It is our pleasure to know you and it’s our wish to keep our friendship going forward.”
Greeting card from High River client:
“Your help and cheerfulness that you showed to my situation cannot be expressed in words!! I felt your caring and understanding. To have one lose their home and all my life’s treasures: children’s baby books, 300 years of family photos...My life under mud and water, but still I have a lot to be grateful for.”
If you’re not already a Red Cross volunteer, consider becoming a Canadian Red Cross volunteer today.Letter to Calgary caseworker:
“I am choosing to see last year as a blessing because of people like you, for what a great gift to be reminded that this life is flavoured with wonderful, kind, thoughtful, selfless friends such as you. It is truly a gift to have you in my circle of Angels. It leaves me speechless and inspired.”Red Cross is thankful for our wonderful team of volunteers and staff. Together, we are making a difference.
