Why we're going #REDforSYRIA

Today, we’re turning our social media avatars red to show our support and solidarity with the volunteers of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, as we mark three years since the beginning of the conflict in Syria.

Red represents the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems which should be respected and provide protection in times of conflict. Red also symbolizes the courage and passion of volunteers.

The #REDforSYRIA initiative by the Red Cross Red Crescent movement is aimed at mobilizing online communities to display solidarity with all volunteers and aid workers who risk their lives on a daily basis to assist those in need, pay tribute to many of those who have died while on duty, and jointly call for the protection of all humanitarian workers.

Our own sister society, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (@SYRedCrescent) has been at the forefront of the humanitarian response since the beginning of the conflict, distributing aid to millions despite the dangers.
Since the conflict began, 34 staff and volunteers of the Red Crescent in Syria have been killed while on duty. Today, volunteers and aid workers continue to risk their lives to distribute relief supplies and provide assistance to Syrians impacted by the conflict, reaching three million people every month.

On March 14 and 15, we invite you to join our call to support Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers on social media. We’ll be using the hashtag #REDforSYRIA and sharing updates on the impact of the crisis is Syria and the efforts of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
