Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: The widespread absence of security, caused by the conflict and rising crime are exacerbating an already disastrous situation for thousands of people. The ICRC and the Central African Red Cross Society are continuing to respond to the most urgent needs.

On March 8, an ICRC staff member in northern Central African Republic was killed in connection with violence in Ndele.  The ICRC appeals to all parties to the conflict to comply with the rules of international humanitarian law so that those striving to help the civilian population can do their life-saving work.

SRI LANKA: The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has embarked on a project to support people returning to their lands in Northern Sri Lanka in rebuilding their homes after decades of displacement.  The program, which provides cash grants to beneficiaries, is implemented in partnership with the Government of Sri Lanka. Government representatives propose a list of people whose houses have been destroyed or damaged during the conflict, then Red Cross Project Officers visit every person on the list to verify eligibility for assistance from the program.
