Is your family earthquake prepared?

Guest post by Kathryn Dunmore, Red Cross Blogger

With a couple of earthquakes shaking up the west coast in the past few weeks, it’s a good opportunity to review your family’s preparedness level, especially for those living in British Columbia and other earthquake-prone regions.

The first step in preparing for earthquakes or other disasters is to know the risks in your community. The second step is ensuring your family has a plan and knows what to do in emergency situations, including how to protect yourselves in an earthquake. Think “drop, cover and hold on”! Red Cross has resources and tips to help families create a plan specific to earthquakes. The third step is making or getting a disaster preparedness kit to ensure your family has enough supplies for 72 hours.

Know your risk, have a plan, make a kit.

In coastal areas, it’s also important to be aware of tsunami notices and to understand what they mean. This tsunami notices webpage from Emergency Info BC also provides information on zones of higher risk for British Columbia residents so they can properly prepare their families.
